Saamis Progam Teacher At Medicine Hat School District No. 76

Location: Medicine Hat, Alberta

Job Description

The Medicine Hat Public School Division provides quality learning environments that make available positive experiences that are developmentally appropriate and support the whole student. As the Alternative Education Teacher within the Saamis Program, the expectation is to provide a learning environment that supports students in their academic, social and physical growth. The Saamis Program teacher will be working with a small group of students who have severe emotional/behavioural needs. Key skills to success in this position are the ability to build positive relationship, the ability to incorporate differentiated instruction into daily routine as well as strong classroom management. The primary focus of the role is to support students in their development of skills and strategies that will allow them to be successful in school as well as in the community. Experience working in a diversity of High School curriculums is an asset, a strong background working with at-risk youth is essential. The Saamis Program Teacher should:

Be able to support students academically at a High School level

  • Have the ability to support students with Behavioural and Emotional challenges

  • Ability to maintain consistency in routine

  • Create a culture of high expectations for academics as well as individual growth

  • Ability to assess individual behaviours and situational factors quickly to determine
    potential risks and develop a suitable course of action

  • Work well as a team player and develop student programming

  • Adaptable to high stress situations and work in fast-paced and changing
    environments

  • Supervise students and ensure student, staff safety

  • Develop relationships in the community that support community-based projects and learning

  • Enforce rules, and discipline accordingly

  • Develop and maintain positive communication with parents/guardians

  • supporting students as they work towards High School completion
