Software Quality Test Lead At General Electric

Location: Markham, Ontario

Job Description

Role Summary:
The Software Quality Test Lead will be responsible for executing test procedures to ensure the quality and performance of GE Grid Automation PC Windows based products including Smart Gateway Configurator (SGConfig), Digital Substation Agile Studio (DSAS) and Distributed Automation Platform (DAP) applications intended for the electric utility SCADA industry worldwide.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Be part of an agile development team that develops PC based applications for configuring
    Gateways and RTUs
  • Own and develop test cases for each requirement as part of every iteration schedule
  • Provide leadership by example and teamwork over multiple NPI project implementation
    and execution, as well as, all customer support and issues provided by team
  • Define test procedures and design test strategies (minimum set of tests to meet corporate
    quality standards and optimize tests resources)
  • Lead and mentor PB test specialists
  • Collaborate, contribute, estimate and advise upper management and NPI teams on
    software quality test and plans for projects, customers, budgets, resources, tools and
    technologies
  • Take on frontline role in the handling of critical customer and business issues
  • Carry out investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
  • Design tests beyond simple functional verification to include performance, boundary
    and negative testing
  • Ensure external/internal customer issues (JIRA / Version 1) are assigned, actionable as
    required and reported on a regular periodic basis
  • Design test automation framework to enhance test coverage
  • Assign and oversee test team personnel on NPI projects and customer support activities
  • Mentor test team members by constructive feedback, sharing of best practices and
    experience, and bolstering support and providing backup to team members as required
  • Work directly with other software development leads, business functional organizations
    and management to support all phases of NPI and LCS business activities and planning
  • Be current and at the forefront of new test technologies and strategies, examining
    opportunities for business improvement
  • Identify and ensure requirements traceability to test cases
  • Identify and report defects detected during testing
  • Assist in prioritization of reported defects and work with software developers to facilitate
    timely closure
  • Verify resolution of resolved defects
  • Record and report test results in an effective manner
  • Support validating field issues for tier 3/4 cases


Qualifications/Requirements:
  • A university degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a computer-related discipline
    (STEM)
  • The candidate is a software quality/product validation (PV) test specialist with minimum 5 years
    of experience in testing of embedded or PC based software applications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as team leader supporting product manager and/or scrum
    masters with preparation of execution plans
  • Minimum five years of hands on experience testing of Windows desktop software
  • Strong English written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • SCADA Software verification experience
  • Experience with industrial / utility communications protocols, especially any of the following:
    DNP3, ModBus, IEC 61850
  • Experience with GE substation automation products – D400, D20MX, D25, SGConfig


Desired Characteristics:
  • Understanding of utility / SCADA communication protocols concepts, networking and
    interaction between Intelligent Electronic Devices will be an asset
  • Experience with industrial applications will be an asset
  • Organized ability to multi-task and stay organized
  • High energy, self-starter, with a proven track record in delivering results
  • Establishes a sense of urgency to complete tasks in an efficient, timely and effective manner
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Prior experience in engineering, testing and instrumentation
  • Experience with protocol analyzers and test tools such as ASE2000 and Ethereal
  • Familiarity with networking concepts and protocols such as TCP/IP and FTP
  • Familiarity with electric utility SCADA equipment and concepts
  • Familiarity with real-time multi-tasking operating system concepts
