Engineer, Specialty At General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Job Description

Project/Program Overview

The Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Specialty Engineer will be responsible to support design activities, plan, conduct, and report on design verification and formal qualification of products. The engineer will be required to work with customers and other disciplines to resolve electromagnetic environmental effects related issues on various products.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake full responsibility for the execution of all the electromagnetic environmental effects activities, such as planning, design and testing of a product.
  • Take part in negotiations with customers to arrive at final agreement of EMC/EMI requirements.
  • Review of COTS equipment for electromagnetic environmental effects suitability.
  • Monitor design and provide design advice and analysis.
  • Produce formal electromagnetic environmental effects test plans and procedures - tailored for the project.
  • Participate in electrical and mechanical formal design reviews.
  • Identify risk areas and coordinate/conduct design proving test activities.
  • Perform electromagnetic environmental effects formal qualification testing.
  • Performing TEMPEST (EMSEC) testing.
  • Produce formal electromagnetic environmental effects test reports.
  • Development of test fixtures.
  • Trouble-shoot test failures and anomalies to determine root cause(s).
  • Interact with engineering/technical staff to determine appropriate fixes when a test failure occurs.
  • Attend Team meetings to resolve technical, resource, and schedule issues.
  • Provide progress updates to the electromagnetic environmental effects and Product/Program Team Lead(s).

Qualifications

While not all skills or experience listed below are required, possessing any one of them will be considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of relevant EMC standards:
    • MIL-STD-461
    • MIL-STD-1275
    • MIL-STD-704
    • DEF-STAN 59-411
  • Mechanical aptitude for development of test fixtures.
  • Knowledge of the following programming languages:
    • Tile!
    • Labview
    • HP Vee
  • Knowledge of cable design and construction.
  • Knowledge of TEMPEST (EMSEC).
  • Knowledge of Lightning Effects (LE).
  • Knowledge of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).
  • Knowledge of Power Quality (PQ).
  • Knowledge of Radiation Hazards (RADHAZ).
  • Knowledge of Radio Cosite/Collocation Performance.
  • Knowledge of Antenna Modeling & Simulation on Platforms.
  • Knowledge of Signal Integrity (SI) Design and Simulation.
  • Interest in Electromagnetics, radio, telecommunication or networking technologies.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, or applicable technical or scientific discipline

Minimum 10 year consecutive residence in Canada – for Canadian Secret Security Clearance

Applicants will be required to obtain/hold a valid and current Canadian security clearance to gain access to the classified spaces, information and equipment in order to perform the work associated with this position.
