Intern - Product Development - Personalized Healthcare Data Science
Location: South San Francisco Target
Start Date: Summer 10-12 Weeks
Hours: Part-time (20 hours per week) or full-time (40 hours per week)

This intern will help develop biomarkers in biosciences.
Genentech is seeking multiple interns either pursuing, or recent graduates from a MSc/PhD degree with expertise in machine learning to help us explore its potential applications in healthcare. Our interns will join the Personalized Healthcare (PHC) Data Science team and work on an innovative project applying advanced analytics and machine learning approaches to the company's real world (e.g. electronic medical records, insurance claims, medical transcripts), genomic, and clinical trial data assets spanning multiple disease areas. We are looking for individuals who are: Creative problem solvers, quick learners and comfortable experimenting with new approaches Demonstrate high productivity and enjoys dealing with ambiguity and applying novel methodologies Possess entrepreneurship, passion and curiosity for understanding and interrogating complex data. Each intern will be focused on one of the following projects (selection will be based on skill fit as well as interest area): Predict oncology outcomes based on longitudinal electronic medical record (EMR) data. Design and build data science infrastructure solutions to drive best practices and efficiency for machine learning.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the PHC Data Science team and other stakeholders to evaluate potential machine learning techniques and applications
Design, build and interpret machine learning algorithms to address selected research questions (including preparing the input data)
Proactively share learnings and knowledge to support the development of the wider PHC Data Science team
Help shape the direction of machine learning and artificial intelligence for the PHC Data Science team
Preferred experience:
Advanced analytics including machine learning, familiarity with patient-level healthcare data, and survival analysis.
Apply natural language processing and machine learning on large amounts of unstructured medical note data for the purpose of information retrieval.
Natural language processing (including but not limited to deep learning, text data processing, entity extraction, coreference resolution in biomedical domain, etc.)
Familiarity with oncology and medical terminology.
Reproducible research, R/Python package development, data engineering, and interactive analyses.
Requirements:
MSc/PhD degree candidate or recent graduate in Data Science related field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Epidemiology, Health Economics, Outcomes Research, Computer Science)
Machine learning techniques, fluency in statical programming languages, experience implementing reproducible research practices like version control, experience with technologies required to undertake analyses on large data sources or with computationally intensive steps, experience applying machine learning algorithms and techniques, preferably to healthcare data, demonstrated contributions to open source packages, libraries or functions, and strong communication and collaboration skills
Knowledge of a wide range of machine learning techniques and applications
Experience applying machine learning algorithms and techniques, preferably to healthcare data
Experience with technologies required to undertake analyses on large data sources or with computationally intensive steps (SQL, parallelization, Hadoop, Spark, HPC cluster computing, Docker)
Fluency in statistical programming languages (R, Python, etc.)
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Experience implementing reproducible research practices like version control (e.g. using Git) and literate programming
Demonstrated contributions to open source packages, libraries or functions
