Job Description
Role Summary: We currently have an opportunity for a Lead Hardware Designer responsible for new product introduction (NPI) or technical life cycle support for existing products.
Essential Responsibilities: This role is responsible for designing hardware products, systems and assemblies for embedded systems used in substation/distribution automation solutions as well as design, layout, prototyping and testing of the modules developed or supported. You will also provide support for validation and compliance testing as part of the design cycle process.
Participate in scheduled design reviews, providing updates on issues, progress and plans
Create and revise technical specifications, detailed design, schematics, printed circuit board layout, component life cycle/margin analysis, reliability analysis and test specifications, traceable to system technical requirements.
Prepare high level designs block diagrams and system level interaction documents
Adhere and enforce established design practices in hardware design
Perform thorough prototype verification testing against technical requirements, providing records of test for functional, performance, compliance and reliability aspects
Work alongside and provide support to other team developers and designers in the system integration and test of software and hardware modules
Perform root cause analysis and corrective action on design and customer critical issues
Provide technical support to product validation teams during test and provide timely response to defect resolution
Work with cross-functional team supporting sourcing, manufacturing, systems engineering and customer service
Ensure work products are under version control and archived regularly
Prepare engineering change order release and follow it up through to production
Mentor junior designers on project team
Qualifications/Requirements:
A university degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent
10+ years' experience with hardware design and development for embedded products
Excellent knowledge of high-speed Freescale, ARM or Intel processors-based designs
Analog and signal processing design experience for low level signal design
Working knowledge on FPGA and VHDL Design
Switch mode power supply topologies and design
Network and serial communication interface design
Electro-magnetic compatibility, environmental and safety compliance standards for electric utilities and substations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills & interpersonal skills
Design for reliability methods, HALT and HASS methodology
Desired Characteristics:
Work in an independent manner utilizing sound judgment to make decisions
Preferred experience with substation / distributed automation products
