Accessibility Advisor At Conestoga College

Location: Doon, Ontario

Job Description

Full-time temporary replacement position (July 2018 - November 2018) Appendix D. Full-time support staff will be given first consideration.

Responsibilities:

We require a qualified professional to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team within Student Success Services to support students with disabilities to achieve academic success.

Position focus is facilitating the academic accommodation processes which includes:

  • understanding disability and functional impacts on learning and participation
  • advising students of their rights and responsibilities
  • working with students to develop a success plan that considers adaptive technology and devices, academic supports, peer supports, case management, counselling, career and co-op supports, and other supports/services offered at Conestoga
  • monitoring and following up with the student’s application of the success plan
  • re-evaluating and adapting the plan with the student and relevant stakeholders as needed
  • executing a proactive communication plan to support new and returning students from admission to graduation
  • maintaining appropriate confidential records
  • problem solving academic accommodations with faculty as needed
  • facilitating referrals to external community supports/services (e.g. transportation, housing, attendant care, community employment agencies) as needed
  • developing strong relationships with school boards and community agencies to support student pathways into College and to strengthen transition supports
  • facilitating information sessions for prospective students and their support networks regarding postsecondary opportunities, support services available, transition planning, student success
  • developing and facilitating experiential workshops
  • participating in School Specialty Teams within Student Success Services and actively contributing to the success of school-specific initiatives and projects
  • providing information on how to promote and support placement and co-op opportunities for students with disabilities
  • sharing knowledge and expertise with faculty and administrators across the college to promote a positive, proactive approach to helping students to be successful
  • contributing to the planning and execution of departmental and College events such as College Fair, Open house, Discovery Day, Orientation, and C Success
  • staying current in the field of disability studies, adaptive technology, and student success/retention
  • working with the Associate Director, department, and School Specialty Team to research and respond to changing student demographics and program trends
  • researching and piloting new delivery models (including drop-in and virtual)
  • contributing to Accessibility@Conestoga data collection and reporting processes
  • evaluating effectiveness of service delivery, identifying key issues, and targeting continuous improvements

Qualifications:

  • Four year degree in Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is required
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • Three years’ current experience directly-related to working with persons with disabilities in a educational setting, preferably post-secondary
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the AODA and other relevant legislation in the post-secondary context
  • Commitment to principles of empowerment and inclusion
  • Display a high degree of initiative and creative thinking skills
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and strong interpersonal skills required
  • Flexibility in the work schedule, including one late shift per week
  • Ability to travel to satellite campuses
  • Demonstrated experience working with students who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Injury, Learning Disabilities, Psychiatric Disabilities, Physical and Sensory Disabilities
  • Excellent judgment, analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills to assess documentation, evaluate student needs, recommend and develop accommodation plans and evaluate service delivery
  • Applied knowledge of carrying out recommendations in psycho-educational and/or neuro-psychological assessments, medical reports, and other assessments
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development and adult learning & development theories, approaches and best practices
  • Demonstrated workshop facilitation skills using experiential delivery model is essential
  • Enthusiastic team player with the ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Proficiency in/experience with computer applications including MSWord, OneNote and Excel and electronic notetaking and databases systems
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new software applications is important
