Web Producer, The New Yorker The New Yorker is seeking a copy editor and Web producer to join its digital newsroom. The hired applicant will generally work Monday through Friday, from 1 to 9 p.m., or four weekdays and either Saturday or Sunday each week, most of those days between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Overview: The role of the Web producer is primarily to copy-edit pieces on a wide variety of topics for newyorker.com. This person will also update the site’s home page and section pages, produce newsletters, and occasionally be involved in social-media promotion. A good candidate is a thorough reader who can quickly catch and fix mistakes of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. We are looking for someone who has a finely tuned ear for language and is able to gracefully recast sentences for clarity and concision when necessary. This position also involves writing headlines and other display copy. Applicants should have a strong sense of The New Yorker’s tone and sensibility, and a serious interest in learning the magazine’s extensive house style. Candidates should be comfortable learning new editorial systems. The role is a full-time position, at our offices in New York, and sometimes requires working late nights, depending on the demands of the news cycle, and occasional weekends and holidays. Requirements: Candidates must have: * two years’ experience as a Web producer or copy editor * experience and comfort with Web publishing * mastery of the history, style, and values of The New Yorker * a strong interest in current affairs, and a willingness to work at the speed of the Web * a flair for writing display copy that engages the reader and adheres to The New Yorker’s distinctive voice and outlook * an interest in digital journalism and an ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks simultaneously * the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
