MANUFACTURING AND MACHINING INSTRUCTOR (P5498)

Scope

Reporting to the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Engineer in Residence, the incumbent will instruct students and staff in the basic skills of mechanical manufacturing in order to improve the teaching of design, and to provide students and staff with more “hands-on” skills to increase their involvement in these activities.

Primary responsibilities

  • Ensure safety standards and established operating procedures are followed.
  • Develop laboratory content, write lab manuals.
  • Train faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students in machining and manufacturing processes, machine tool training and laboratory development.
  • Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding and other operations.
  • Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule the activities of graduate and undergraduate students who machine metal into parts, products, tools and dies or moulds with precise dimensions as well as coordinate work activities with other departments.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine machining or manufacturing operation to be performed, and plan best sequence of operations.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of manufacturing and design as directed.
  • Source and supply materials, machinery and components.
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces.
  • Submit reports and documentation of work, as specified by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Engineering with two to four years of industry experience, preferably in mechanical engineering design or machining.
  • Excellent knowledge of machining using lathes, milling, drilling, and grinding welding machines, band saws, jigs and fixtures; ability to program, operate and set-up CNC machines and to interpret engineering drawings.
  • Proficient in use and instruction of general manufacturing processes including sheet metal work, cutting, joining and welding operations.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English in order to provide instruction and to write/update manuals, posters and other technical teaching accessories, needed for efficient undergraduate lab procedures; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French to provide information and answer general questions; knowledge of written French is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of Word (in order to format simple documents) and Excel (in order to work on simple spreadsheets).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organization skills, and be able to work independently or as part of team with students, other technical staff and faculty.
  • Ability to prioritize projects set and achieve deadlines; strong problem-solving skills.

Salary

$65,444.99 – $78,173.81 per annum
