Marketing Strategist At Calgary Zoo

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Job Description

Globally recognized conservation organization seeks a sales-oriented marketer looking for meaningful work that impacts wildlife and wild spaces by merging traditional and modern marketing approaches to change the trajectory of the animals, plants and people on our planet.

Reporting to the Marketing, Manager, the Marketing Strategist is responsible for delivering revenue generating marketing initiatives that build profitability and reputation. This role is best suited for an individual who thinks both logically and creatively and who can apply the art of the possible to achieving business goals. This is a key role within a high performing team and requires a professional who can develop and execute marketing plans and sales opportunities that gather insights, attract leads, improve sales and drive demand generation.

The preferred candidate must be able to activate on consumer behavior trends, generate ideas and deploy an integrated marketing strategy that positions the Calgary Zoo as a top-tier choice for guests, special events and corporate partnerships.

The Marketing Strategist requires a high energy, proactive and passionate project manager who is able to work within a dynamic environment delivering on multiple brand and special event priorities.

Position Key Accountabilities

This position will provide strategic council and tactical contribution to all integrated marketing and special event campaigns and is responsible for sourcing, purchasing and managing marketing tools and services that drive market share for the Calgary Zoo.

What you will do
  • Research and analyze market trends, pricing schedules, competitor offerings, product specifications and demographic data then transform that information into a marketing strategy
  • Deploy a campaign management approach to marketing initiatives including planning, budgeting, forecasting, delivery and evaluation
  • Work closely with Business Development to identify prospects and build a marketing pipeline to generate sales, grow brand awareness and drive relevant traffic to our website, social platforms and venues
  • Liaise with and provide leadership to our external creative agencies as well as purchase advertising on traditional and digital channels
  • Manage brand standards in zoo produced materials and partner promotions to create a cohesive feel to each campaign
  • Act as a go-to resource for up-to-date, accurate research and market information for the Calgary Zoo team


This positon requires
  • A strong content thinker who can craft and envision imagery and copy in multiple styles customized for unique audiences
  • A self-motivated, flexible, responsive, and collaborative approach to achieving sales targets
  • The ability to manage pressure, tight timelines and quick turnarounds
  • An understanding of metrics and evaluation
What You Will Bring
  • Five years of relevant experience working in a formal marketing role
  • Experience in travel, tourism and hospitality industry an asset
  • Strong project management skills with a thorough understanding of traditional and digital marketing tools; specifically SEO and SEM
  • Demonstrable experience in marketing data analytics and tools
  • Experience with special events including collateral development and management
  • Solid computer skills, including MS Office, marketing software and applications
  • Degree or diploma in Marketing or Communications is preferred

The Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
