Accounting Assistant III At Baltimore Convention Center

SALARY: $37,741

CLASS DEFINITION:

An Accounting Assistant III works to prepare financial statements and in accounts receivable, accounts payable and procurement functions. The position is also responsible for reconciliations and adjustments of accounts. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision and guidance from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office where working conditions are normal. The work requires minimal physical exertion.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK:

The work of this class is distinguished from that of Accounting Assistant II in that it involves auditing accounts in order to prepare financial statements and adjusting a variety of accounts and may involve recommending changes in bookkeeping and accounting procedures.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF THE WORK:

  • Process requisitions and expenditure authorization requests for city purchase orders for Convention Center operations.
  • Perform the Accounts Payable role of the Convention Center to pay vendor invoices
  • Contacts vendors, departmental personnel, and others to obtain and provide information and resolve disagreements.
  • Serve as a liaison between Convention Center staff and City Procurement and Accounts Payable staff
  • Allocates costs to a variety of accounts according to established procedures.
  • Support the preparation of financial statements.
  • Analyze financial activity of Convention Center Operations
  • Examine accounts and records for compliance with accounting procedures and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Process Credit Card receipts.
  • Prepare forms for check deposits, make bank deposits, and reconcile deposit to General Ledger
  • Provide guidance and work direction to office support staff.
  • Review bookkeeping and accounting procedures and recommends modifications.
  • Post and prepare biweekly payroll timesheets for Convention Center employees using approved time and attendance reports, leave slips and overtime/comp time documents.
  • Assists with Convention Center administrative activities: (e.g. mail distribution, front desk coverage, etc).
  • Performs other related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of bookkeeping / accounting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access and Excel
  • Ability to utilize Business Intelligence tools
  • Ability to quickly learn computer systems
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations
  • Ability to maintain a wide variety of accounts
  • Ability to deal courteously with other employees and the public
  • Ability to train office support personnel
  • Ability to prepare financial reports
  • Ability to recommend modifications in bookkeeping and accounting procedures
  • Ability to think analytically and solve problems

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requirements – Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and five years of experience in bookkeeping

Equivalencies – Equivalent combination of education and experience; or completion of associates degree in accounting, business, finance may be substituted for the experience requirement.
