Job Description

Overview

Right now it's almost impossible to vote informed on the entire ballot - as a result, most voters guess, leave blanks, or stay home altogether.

We believe that it's critical to our democracy to help every voter cast an informed vote on every race, every election. That's why we started BallotReady - a startup that creates digital nonpartisan voter guides and builds tools to help advocacy groups and campaigns inform and mobilize voters, powered by the most comprehensive database to local politics.

Founded in 2015 with funding from the National Science Foundation, the Knight Foundation, and the University of Chicago, BallotReady is now nationwide - in 2018, we covered 95,000 candidates on our platform and reached over 6 million voters in the midterm elections.

Role

BallotReady seeks a Business Development Representative to join our sales team and catalyze growth as we experiment with new markets in 2019 and scale for 2020. This is an opportunity to develop expertise in sales and prospecting, spearhead new projects to experiment with lead generation and effective sales techniques, propose and test new product ideas, and work directly with BallotReady senior leadership and co-founders to achieve our goals in the next 24 months.

Responsibility

  • Seek out new business opportunities through cold calling to engage, consult, and help close new deals
  • Provide cross-functional administrative support internally across sales: crafting proposals, developing email campaigns, and communicating with the data team
  • Ensure a flawless transition of accounts to customer success
  • Generate white papers, presentations, company insights, and other marketing materials to position BallotReady as an industry leader
  • Represent BallotReady at local, and regional events where agencies, trade associations, unions, campaigns, and consultants gather

Leadership: BallotReady is a startup, meaning that every single person contributes to our success, roles often change or evolve, and team members are frequently given new projects and asked to figure out how to make them happen. We're looking for people who are ambitious problem-solvers, who love to tackle challenges, and are excited by the ambiguities and opportunities in this role.

Drive: In our experience, sales requires a hunger for hunting down and closing deals. Some days it necessitates cold-calling candidates, navigating a long list of campaign finance disclosures, and dealing with rejection. But we love the feeling of closing a deal and solving a problem for a campaign, and we're looking for team members who share our enthusiasm for beating our monthly goals and winning over a difficult client.

Data: We've found that successful sales are built from disciplined use of data. We are meticulous about keeping our deals up-to-date in our CRM, and we love to run experiments like A/B testing email subject lines and measuring the results.

Accountability: At BallotReady, we're strong believers in flexibility in exchange for accountability. We trust our team to understand our goals and allocate their time accordingly - that's why we're looking for candidates with strong communication, organization, and self-reflection in order to manage multiple deadlines without a lot of oversight.
