Quality Engineer, Burnaby, BC Canada At Ballard

Location: Burnaby, British Columbia

Job Description

Ballard’s Quality group has an immediate opening for a Quality Engineer who will be responsible to ensure effective development, transfer, and maintenance of products/processes throughout the product lifecycle by using Quality Engineering tools. Additionally this individual will play active role in root cause investigations and validation of the corrective and/or preventative actions related to quality issues.


Responsibilities:

  • Drives identification of the root cause of quality issues and execution of product quality improvements through preventive or corrective actions
  • Provides support to manufacturing regarding change management, discrepant material and product qualifications
  • Collect data related to product and process quality and prepare reports
  • Evaluate process and quality data to provide appropriate recommendations and reports.
  • Performing product, process, and quality system audits.
  • Providing input to the development, revision and control of quality system elements including components of the Quality Manual, applicable policies, procedures, work instruction and forms.
  • Participating in work teams for continuous improvement activities
  • Provide support for training activities as required.
  • Evaluation of suspect material and work with multidisciplinary teams to define, validate and implement containment, corrective and preventive actions across the organization and other affected parties.


Requirements:

  • A strong technical background is required (e.g.: undergraduate degree in science or engineering)
  • 5+ years of experience at minimum in Quality Engineer role
  • Knowledge of PEM fuel cells is beneficial.
  • General quality background knowledge is required: basic understanding of measurement techniques, measurement systems analysis, inspection sampling plans, quality tools, 8D problem solving and root cause analysis.
  • Experience using APQP elements including PPAP, DFMEA and PFMEA, control plan
  • Understanding of statistics as they apply to quality, SPC, MSA.
  • Process Excellence Certification, such as Lean Six Sigma, Quality by Design Green Belt or Black Belt, is preferred
  • Extremely good written and oral communication skills. Clarity is required in all communications
  • Must be polite and diplomatic, but still able to make requirements known and understood within Ballard
  • Must be able to explain complex concepts to all levels of personnel from shop floor to executives
  • Must be tenacious and not give up easily – rigorous follow up is frequently required.
  • Must be easy to work with (co-operative team player), yet able to work independently when required
  • Strong record keeping and organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced team environment
  • Must be able to manage multiple issues simultaneously
  • Must act with a sense of urgency


Additional Consideration:

  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) preferred
  • ASQ Certified Quality Auditor is a bonus
