CFD Analysis Engineer, Burnaby, BC Canada
Location: Burnaby, British Columbia

Ballard’s Modeling Team requires a full time position for an Analysis Engineer to work in Product Development. This position will mainly focus on developing models to simulate and validate critical fuel cell design parameters. The analysis methods (along with supporting tools) are used for design development, design space studies, proving design sensitivity studies, performance and degradation models and failure investigation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, validate and maintain specific simulation models for predicting fuel cell performance and other critical fuel cell parameters.
  • Use CFD tools to evaluate fuel cell stack and system designs to meet fluid flow, thermal and electrical requirements.
  • Provide critical input for design selection process during the development phase (MEA/Unit Cell/Stack) using modeling results and engineering analysis.
  • Provide unit cell engineers with ability to leverage modeling tools to advance their designs with considerations for alternative design solutions.
  • Use analysis methods to support unit cell design verification process.
  • Determine tolerance range and design limits with analysis and measurement tools to provide design trade offs to optimize design and process capability.
  • Ability to work to time schedule and commitments for deliverables. Must be willing to determine scope of work and plan effectively toward those commitments.

Qualifications:
  • A BSc. degree in applied science or engineering with at least 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Very good capability and some experience with analytical and numerical mathematical methods for solving differential equations (ordinary and partial).
  • Working knowledge of flow mechanics, heat and mass transfer and electrical processes and their governing equations. Electrochemistry knowledge is not required, but it is considered an important asset.
  • Knowledge/experience with computer programming languages such as or similar to Matlab, C, or Fortran.
  • Very familiar with CFD tools such as ESI ACE+ and/or Ansys Fluent and with meshing software such as Hypermesh.
  • Experience with testing methods, measurement tools and model validation studies is preferred.
  • Very good capability using analysis tools for design activities.
  • Comfortable with drawings and design standards.
