Director, Quality, Burnaby, BC, Canada At Ballard

Location: Burnaby, British Columbia

Job Description

The Director, Quality will act as a key member of Ballard’s leadership team and will be instrumental in the success of the Ballard’s business by leading and driving quality as a key pillar of the organization. The Director will embrace and utilize lean six sigma principals and data driven management to assess and continually improve execution of the quality strategy in the organization. The successful candidate will manage a team of approximately 17, including functional professionals and direct labour staff. This position will be based in our Burnaby Head Office.

The Director, Quality will provide overall leadership and direction for Ballard Power Systems Quality Management systems including supplier quality management systems. This individual is responsible for quality control, quality assurance, compliance, supplier quality management and calibrations. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator, exceptional team player and will manage activities within this group targeted to deliver high impact results.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a company culture that supports the overall business objectives and focuses on safety, quality, cost, schedule, delivery, continuous improvement, process and people
  • Accept overall responsibility and accountability for maintaining the Quality Management system which includes all company policies, procedures and work instructions
  • Prepare Annual Quality/Performance Management Plan and outline strategies and goals for the Fiscal Year, and monitors progress towards goals
  • Monitor and report on performance of the Quality Management System KPIs to executive management at defined intervals
  • Champion continuous improvement efforts to gain product/process efficiencies by using lean Six sigma methodologies
  • Contribute to development of corporate strategy
  • Ensure the internal review and audit program is established and audits are performed as scheduled
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure Quality policies and procedures are maintained and updated as required
  • Ensure adherence to the supplier assessment and selection process in accordance with the quality system, as well as, manages supplier non-conformance issues and PPAPs
  • Work collaboratively with other senior management team members to meet business priorities
  • Build a high performing team by setting targets and performance measures for direct reports and ensuring their career progression plans are established and met
  • Provide support and guidance to the other functions as required relative to quality issues and Six Sigma methodologies

Qualifications

  • Business or engineering degree
  • Minimum of 10 years well-rounded progressive experience in product quality, design and manufacture
  • Strong background in Quality Engineering and/or Lean Six Sigma (ASQ Certified Quality Engineer and/or LSS Black Belt certification a plus)
  • Experience in developing ISO9001, ISO14001 and IATF16949 compliant integrated Quality Systems
  • Significant management system auditing experience (ISO Lead Auditor and/or ASQ Certified Quality Auditor, VDA6.3 auditor credentials are a plus)
  • Sound background in use of statistical analysis and/or statistical process control
  • Relevant experience in the use of improvement tools such as: 5S, Value Stream/Process Mapping, Kaizen, Design of Experiments and/or other similar tools
