User Experience Researcher At Backstop Solutions Group LLC

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Job Description

Job Description:

Backstop is a Chicago based company that makes the industry-leading, cloud-based productivity suite for alternative investments and the people who invest in them. The User Experience team at Backstop is a diverse group of designers who are interested in designing solutions that solve real problems for our clients in a way that makes them fans of our digital platform. We believe in measuring our results by our client’s success and the enthusiasm they display for our products.

The User Experience team is looking for a User Experience Researcher. We recognize that user research is core to a user-centered product development process. As a User Experience Researcher for Backstop, you will be responsible for planning and conducting client research at every stage of the product’s lifecycle; from its conceptualization, prototype validations, all the way to usability tests on the final product and engaging with clients after the launch of new features.

Key initiatives

  • Recruitment Outreach

You will be in charge of setting up and managing a recruitment program. The recruitment and coordination phase of user research is critical. Getting enough users to commit to and show up for a round of interviews is more than half the battle. You will partner with our client facing teams (Sales, Marketing, Client Support) to assemble a list of research participants and compile a research participant database. You will also define processes to screen, schedule and reach out to our clients to optimize our research program.

  • Conduct Usability Testing on Key Products

With each new project there are a lot of unknowns. Your role is to reduce the unknowns in each step of the design and development process, which will allow teams increased focus on creating the best possible solution. You will team up with UXA and Designers to examine how to perform research throughout the development lifecycle, from early concept design (think rough sketches or prototypes) to the final product. You will be responsible for applying the appropriate research techniques within the constraints of the project’s practical parameters and ensuring a high-quality research plan. You will get the data necessary to inform design decisions and to understand how those decisions perform in real life.

  • Educate and Enable Others

You will be responsible for building an internal site to house all of research documentation and resources, including processes, best practices, notes, reports, and outcomes. It should be organized in a way that anyone can view this site and see what the UX team has been working on. You will also create sample screeners, research plans, and research reports, as well as UX research best practice to assist others in being able to set up and conduct their own user test sessions.
Required Experience:

Traits for success

  • Knowledge of accessibility methods and standards, WCAG, or section 508 compliance guidelines.
  • Experience with recruiting and scheduling participants for usability and UX testing.
  • You are able to transform questions into formal research plans and then using the appropriate methods you uncover the insights that drive new experiences and inform development.
  • A demonstrated ability to identify and define opportunities (key research questions) and from there, building research projects that align with and contribute to business needs.
  • You have experience conducting interviews, online surveys and focus groups with client stakeholders and external users to understand measurable goals and identify any additional user requirements.
  • You have proficiency analyzing research data and synthesizing those analytics insights with other research findings to create recommendations.
  • You know how to get stakeholders excited about research findings. You present findings in a compelling way to help stakeholders understand client needs and how they impact solutions.
  • Mentor more junior UX, PM, and other interested teammates in UX research best practices.
  • 5+ years research experience.
  • BA/BS (MS/MA preferred) in Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or equivalent work experience.

You must be able to provide a portfolio showing

  • Work that demonstrates your process and the ability to communicate informed design rationale and value.
  • Experience taking ideas from execution to implementation

What your future team looks like

  • You will be part of a team consisting of UX Architects, Designers and Researchers.
  • We host lunch and learns to share our UX knowledge and attend conferences to stay up to date on the latest in tech.
  • We are a lively, opinionated, and diverse bunch. We like to discuss UX topics, current events and are up to date on the latest sci-fi flicks and reality shows.
