Purpose of the Position

The Project Engineer is responsible for producing various deliverables and providing technical support in the pursuit of new projects and in the interest of maintaining compliance to project technical standards once the project is underway.

The Project Engineer must have a strong command of the technical and operational aspects of a project and provide technical expertise to the estimating team, proposal team, design team and the project operational functions in order to achieve a successful outcome. Key Responsibilities • Prepare detailed cost estimates using estimating software
  • Providing expertise and advice on project scope including design, labour, equipment, materials, and subcontractors
  • Provide technical expertise and operational perspective on large ($200 Million+) heavy civil construction projects including highways, bridges, roads, tunnels and other infrastructure related projects
  • Provide expertise on various delivery methods for the above project type
  • Manage key relationships with clients, subcontractors and the design team
  • Accurately interpret and comprehend tender drawings and specifications for all projects up to $1 Billion.
  • Present all aspects of the project scope, staging, timing, constraints, risks, and potential cost saving opportunities and alternatives to internal staff
  • Provide Value engineering. Review design options and recommend best solution based on potential risks, cost, engineering, quality, or availability of materials
  • Develop complete understanding of project contract plans and specifications
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise and take corrective actions as needed
  • Inspect subordinates’ work for compliance with the contract plans and specifications, point out deficiencies and explain and take any corrective action needed
  • Provide reporting on project schedule and budget. Participate in project controls activities, tracking and forecasting.
  • Review new issue drawings and contract documents for change of conditions; quantify impact of changes
  • Prepare monthly cost projections using information generated from project management systems and prepare quarterly cash flow projections
  • Improve project operations by recommending, as appropriate, better methods, staffing and procedural changes
• Help drive the company environmental health and safety programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach to work Required Knowledge & Skills • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Two to three years’ experience working as a site or project engineer assigned to heavy civil, infrastructure projects
  • Two to three years of experience in a lead construction management position with the responsibility of overseeing a scope of work and a team of field or site engineers
  • Experience as a design engineer in structures, concrete and steel
  • Two to three years’ experience working on bridge, highway and underground work (shafts) projects
  • Experience using P6 software
  • Two to three years’ estimating experience on bridge projects
  • Previous foundations experience an asset
  • Proficient in software related to construction industry as required
  • Excellent Computer skills including proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Excellent team, interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with the client, field personnel and subcontractors
  • Strong awareness and understanding of construction safety principles
